Warning the Future: Are Today's Lifestyle Pharmaceuticals Tomorrow's Peril?

Lost in the shadow of controversy over the long-term storage of nuclear waste in Nevada's Yucca Mountain Storage Facility is the lesser-known Yucca Pharmaceutical Fad Waste Repository.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has predicted that certain fad lifestyle drugs can remain chemically active for thousands of years and has designed a system of danger markers that
will be placed on the perimeter of the Repository to warn future generations, long after our civilization has perished, of possible physical and cultural contamination from these agents used c. 2000 A.D.
The signs are intended to last 10,000 years, after which natural degradation of the pharmaceuticals will end the threat of ridicule and/or annoyance with our current era by either more or less advanced societies. The symbols are intended to universally communicate the danger of the Repository’s contents across all conceivable cultural and linguistic boundaries.
