Five
Obscure Protest Groups
Marching to the beat of a dissonant
drum
April 2002
HFH
Special Report takes an exclusive
look at five little-known activist groups. Ignored by the mainstream press, these activist
organizations nonetheless have had a major impact on global social
consciousness.
World
Trade Organization (WTO) meetings have become known more for attracting a wide
array of protestors with their cafeteria of causes, rather than for their
official business. But some smaller activist groups, known for their unique
alternative forms of protest, have largely been overlooked by the media. Below
are five small, but dedicated organizations that have given a global
voice to those causes that otherwise would have none.

People
Against Buildings (PAB)

Seeing
buildings as “debilitating cages of the human spirit,” PAB works to reverse
society’s age-old dependence on artificial structures. A series of sit-outs is
planned for this winter.
The Anti-Gravity Project (AGP)

Opposed to
gravity, which coerces people and objects to move in the oppressive direction
known as “down.” Calling gravity's universality a
“Eurocentric myth,” the AGP claims “gravitational discrimination”
disproportionately affects the poor. Sponsor of the Annual Potsdam Helium
Festival and WTO Anti-Newton rallies.
Clean Caves Now & Forever Action Network

Acts to undo
environmental damage caused by "Paleolithic vandals" who defiled cavern walls with
predatory hunting scenes and phallocentric imagery. Clean Caves'
“scrub-squads” have recently clashed with counter-demonstrators from the
Cro-Magnon Defense League.
Coalition Against Large Fish

Opposes the
victimization of small fish and plankton by larger marine predators that often
have no regard for the stress they put on their prey.
The Alliance Against Happiness

The Alliance seeks
a ban on happiness, assuming it must be based on exploitation of nature and
impoverished people. Rather, it promotes lifestyles
based on joylessness and dissatisfaction.
